Ericsson is one of the biggest technology providers for the broadcasting industry. Behind a lot of things there’s Ericsson, whether it’s about conversion of video or media platforms. Let’s take a look!
Ericsson MediaFirst
MediaFirst is a cloud-based mediaplatform for the whole family. You can watch your favourite shows on all your devices based on your own profile with your own preferences. It’s being deployed later this year in the USA and they are also working hard to launch it in Europe at the end of this year.
Ericsson Digital Video Recorder
We all know the digital video recorder, Ericsson is taking it to a next level. Ofcourse it’s cloud based so you can watch your recorded content on every device you own. An interesting feature is that you can save one file (like a football match) and share it with multiple users.
Ericsson Integrated Video Insights
I love statistics, and so does Ericsson. Integrated Video Insights analyses user satisfaction and their activity so Ericsson can improve the customer satisfaction.
Ericsson live subtitles
Everything at MWC TV was subtitled live. It was done by Ericsson. Real people were listening to a live audiofeed and they made sure that all the subtitles were spelled correctly.
Ericsson encoding
All the digital tv channels are encoded by really powerful computers. Ericsson is one of the biggest encoding companies. The popularity of 4K video requires more and more powerful machines.
Op het Mobile World Congress presenteren verschillende bedrijven hun nieuwe smartphones. Vorige week besprak ik de Samsung Galaxy S7 en deze week de bijzondere smartphone van LG, de LG G5.
LG G5
Natuurlijk is het een smartphone met geweldige specificaties, maar dat is niet het nieuwswaardige aan dit toestel. Het grote voordeel is dat je de batterij eruit kunt schuiven en hier vervolgens een ander blokje op kunt zetten. Bij LG noemen ze deze blokjes Friends. Je hebt bijvoorbeeld een camera-blokje met daarin een extra batterij en alle functies die je van een camera verwacht. Of een muziek-blokje van Bang & Olufsen waardoor je smartphone opeens prachtig digitaal geluid krijgt. Met wat schuiven en klikken maak je van je LG toestel een goede camera of gruwelijk strakke muziekspeler.
Voortaan sleep je dus niet meer alleen je smartphone mee, maar ook zijn friends.
Op de Blockchain conferentie had organisator Rutger van Zuidam van Into Bitcoin goed nieuws. Op 20 juni vindt het derde Nationaal Bitcoin Congres plaats en deze wordt geopend door niemand minder dan Minister van Financiën Jeroen Dijsselbloem. Rutger heeft minister Dijsselbloem op werkbezoek mogen ontvangen en uitgebreid gesproken over bitcoin en de blockchain technologie. Ze hebben o.a. besproken wat de kansen en de impact kunnen zijn op het bedrijfsleven en de overheid en de rol die Nederland kan spelen.
Blockchain conferentie
Overdag vond de eerste (rijks)overheidsbrede werkconferentie over Blockchain plaats, georganiseerd door een samenwerkingsverband tussen Belastingdienst/FIOD, IntoBitcoin.com en Politie. Meer dan 80 deelnemers uit zo’n 40 overheidsorganisaties spreken met elkaar over de mogelijkheden en consequenties van de blockchain technologie. De uitkomsten van deze conferentie werden direct gedeeld met het bedrijfsleven in een speciaal aanvullend avondprogramma, georganiseerd door IntoBitcoin.com in Seats2Meet Utrecht.
Voor deze bijeenkomsten kwam Kaspar Korjus, e-Residency Program Director van Estland, speciaal naar Nederland. Estland is een voorloper als het gaat om digitale dienstverlening. Hun e-resident identiteitskaart combineert de voordelen van het internet met een vastgestelde identiteit. Tevens sprak Aeron Buchanan van Ethcore over de mogelijkheden van Ethereum en kansen van smart contracts.
Ruim 60 deelnemers, van zowel corporates, investeerders als start-ups, waren hierbij aanwezig.
Bitcoincongres.nl
Het congres wordt 20 juni gehouden op het hoofdkantoor van KPMG. De focus zal nog meer komen te liggen op de blockchain en de mogelijkheden die deze technologie te bieden heeft. Houd Bitcoincongres.nl in de gaten.
Op 21 en 22 april vindt in het Elicium van RAI Amsterdam TALX, The Amsterdam Leadership Xchange, plaats. Deze keer geen event voor startups, TALX staat helemaal in het teken van disruptive innoveren voor normale bedrijven. En met normale bedrijven bedoelen we de bestaande (grote) MKB-bedrijven. Ze kunnen bij TALX terecht om zich te laten inspireren en informeren en zich voor te bereiden op de toekomst door te innoveren. TALX stelt namelijk:
“Ondernemingen die niet in staat zijn zich aan de dwingende nieuwe norm aan te passen, zullen binnen 10 jaar niet meer in hun huidige vorm bestaan.”
In debatsessies wordt de toekomst van de volgende sectoren besproken: Finance, Healthcare, Automotive, Retail, Smart Industries (3D printing, Internet of Things, Big Data), Data Security, Law, Recruitment, Smart Cities, Food, Media, Education, Energy. Ikzelf modereer die dagen de big data en IoT paneldiscussie.

Waar kijkt iedereen op het Mobile World Congress naar uit? Het nieuws van Samsung. Naast Apple de enige fabrikant die geld verdient aan smartphones. Apple pakt 90% van die winst, Samsung pakt de aantallen. Het nieuwe paradepaardje van Samsung is de Samsung Galaxy S7.
Samsung Galaxy S7
Samsung sloopte eerder een aantal features uit hun Galaxy smartphones, die komen nu in weer terug. Vandaar ook ‘back to the future’. Dit betekent:
Camera van 12 megapixel in plaats van 16 megapixel
Een fors grotere batterij (S7 edge heeft een 3600mAh batterij)
Hij is weer waterdicht en schokbestendig
En je kunt er weer SD kaartjes in stoppen
De camera heeft dus minder megapixels maar knipt wel een stuk beter in het donker. En je kunt er dus onder water mee gaan filmen.
Je kunt de Samsung Galaxy S7 nu al pre-orderen bij verschillende providers en webshops, op 11 maart worden de eerste toestellen geleverd.
Samsung Gear 360
Volgend maand komt Samsung ook nog eens met een 360 graden camera, de Gear 360. Hiermee kun je prachtige 360 graden opnames maken, onder meer voor virtual reality glasses.
We have seen a lot of 5G applications at the Mobile World Congress. Also in Europe we are working hard on this new technology. Thanks to a special beam-technologie (that tracks devices and points the signal at them) Ericsson reaches speeds up to 25Gbit/sec.
Ericsson 5G area ‘On the road to 5G’
Another big player is of course Ericsson. Last year I was incredibly impressed with 3Gbit/s 5G, and what do I see now?! 25Gbit/s! In one year! The secret is the use of smart antennas that work as a beam that targets the device. Thanks to this technology every user can get up to 16Gbit/s internet, no matter how many people are around you. Another great thing about 5G is zero latency. This makes it possible that we can operate devices in other countries live with haptic feedback, like we are there in the room controlling the device. Take a look at Ericsson’s 5G area:
Internet of Things (IoT)
The internet of things is about to grow from 5 billion connected devices to 50 billion. All the devices are going to be smart, from smart devices in your own home to smart cities. They will be able to communicate with each other. Like a bus stop that can communicate with the bus and the customers who are waiting. Ericsson shows how smart a bus stop can be, but we also see ‘connected water’ (water monitoring tools) for clean water and connected wineyards and farms.
Ik doe in 10 minuten een rondleiding van de Ericsson booth. 130 demo’s waar ik er 20 van uitgezocht hebt. Robots en drones die op 3000km worden bestuurd, een interessant supersmart bushokje, verborgen antennes, instant subtitles, 5G demo met 240x 4G snelheid en verborgen antennes. The smart bus stop, the connected car and connected cities. More and more devices are connected to the internet and communicating with each other. Ericsson’s IoT, big data and cloud technology is transforming complete industries.
I walked around with Francisco, a very enthusiastic pre sales engineer who works at Huawei Germany. He showed me around at their enormous 8000m2 booth at the Mobile World Congres. A booth that showed Huawei’s power and money. 8000m2 filled with the latest technology of a fast growing international Chinese backbone player.
He told me about 5G and 4.5G mobile internet and how they increase the speed up to 1.2 Gbit/s. Huawei also showed some examples of what you can do with this super fast 5G internet with really low (practically no) latency. He also explained how they improve the indoor network quality, the use of unlicense spectrum and large crowd support. And of course they had a lot of cool gadgets to play with. Expect a lot of technical details for the real tech geeks among us.
Uiteraard was er heel veel virtual reality te zien op Mobile World Congress. Ik liep hier Ben Woldring tegen het lijf. Ben Woldring komt er al 10 jaar en samen met hem bezoek ik twee spannende virtual reality toepassingen.
Smart City management
Een blik op de toekomst met AT&T. Het Amerikaanse telecombedrijf neemt je mee naar een smart city waar de hele stad vanuit een commandocentrum gemananaged wordt. Als er ergens iets mis gaat wordt dit door sensoren gedetecteerd. De man of vrouw in het commandocentrum (ik dus) krijgt een melding te zien en met behulp van een helikopter gaan we direct actie ondernemen. Bedrijven als AT&T verlenen services op de achtergrond waar je normaal gesproken totaal geen weet van hebt. Zo’n smart city demonstratie is een leuke manier om deze service inzichtelijk te maken. Ben Woldring ziet de toekomst van Virtual Reality heel rooskleurig in!
Extreme VR rollercoaster ride
En dan de klassieker, de Virtual Reality rollercoaster rit. Een demo die je ook vaak zag bij demonstraties van de Oculus Rift. Maar deze Samsung demo gaat een stuk verder. Niet alleen zie je dankzij een VR headset van slechts €100 (en een Samsung Galaxy toestel) goede graphics. Ook bewoog de stoel waar je in zat mee met de rit wat zorgde voor een mega intense VR ervaring.
