Electrification of Volkswagen

Volkswagen has fully committed to the climate goals of the Paris agreement in 2015. The concern will be 0% CO2 for all their vehicles, which means that the last petrol car will be sold in 2040 and that the last platform innovations into fossil cars will be made in 2030. They want 20% of their new cars to be electric in 2025.

Interview Group Strategy Director

How are they going to reach this huge goal? In 2020 a new generation of affordable electric cars with a range of 350km to 550km will come to the market starting from a base price of +-€30.000. What’s the strategy to realize this huge transition? I interview Group Strategy Director Maik Stephan on Volkswagen’s electrification strategy.

Central unit

Many cars have different computer systems for braking, steering, lights and so on. Maik Stephan tells me that VW is working on a new operating system where one central unit will serve the whole car. This unit will be connected to the internet, will support over-the-air-updates and will e.g. allow customers to control the car’s AC/heating via their phone. In developing self-driving mobility, VW partnered up with startup Aurora, which is valued over $2.5 billion!

Is Sophia human or a robot? She has amazing expressions and at Brightday she was a big hit where 250 people asked her questions (and they loved the answers). I got lots of background info from David Chen who was an angel investor and later became the CFO of Hanson Robotics. In 2019, they will release a little version of Sophia for consumers for under $500.

I also interviewed Sophia at CIODAY. How smart is she? She looks cool but there are issues. There are 17 Sophias now in the world.

Watch a critical but interesting analysis of the Sophia project:

This week a Bitcoin Bloodbath! A gigantic battle inside the Bitcoin Cash community with a hard fork between titans as Roger Ver/Bitmain versus Craig Wright (the guy who claims to be Satoshi Nakamoto). Lots of uncertainty and investors are worried with as result that the whole crypto market plunged.

We talked about this yesterday at the 1st anniversary of Bitcoin Magazine. Justin Bons (founder Cybercapital) thinks it’s a very important day because the Bitcoin blockchain is saved & the crooks are defeated! He argues bitcoin is a scam and Bitcoin cash is the most important coin.

Investor Peter Moricz, known for his opinionated views, explains this bloody wednesday.

I also talked to Chris Dawe of Effect.AI who hosted the 1 year anniversary of Bitcoin Magazine. What is Effect.AI?

Then the future of manufacturing & smart city! Is it possible to 3D print a metal bridge? Well, MX3D printed a 12 meter long stainless steel bridge, which will be crossing an Amsterdam canal in the red light district. This bridge is smart and aware and is equipped with lots of Internet-Of-Things sensors. How do you 3D print a bridge like that and why does it need to be smart? Are cameras with face recognition not better? Alec Shuldiner explains his vision to go from one smart bridge to a smart city with respect for privacy.

Every few years I talk to Harold Goddijn, the CEO of TomTom. He is controlling a rollercoaster! In part 1 we talk about the current business, namely sharply declining device sales, selling the hugely successful telematics division, growing automotive sales and the core mapping group. Next week we will discuss the future of the company and what role they play in autonomous driving revolution.

Onderzoeken

– Tesla publishes first quarterly Vehicle Safety report:
– VVN Geschokt: bedrijven staan bellen in auto toe

Ik hoop je morgen te zien!

European Women Payments Network

It is no secret that women are still underrepresented in tech & finance. The European Women Payments Network (EWPN) is the first & only Pan-European network/community that is dedicated to bring together women from all EU/EEA member states, working in cards, fintech & payments. This week, the EWPN held their annual conference with 300 women talking about how they can increase the role of women in the industry. Watch an overview of the event below:

Interviews

I interviewed the attendees at the conference and asked them: Why are they part of the network? What is their role? Are there so few women on top because of men, because of the organizations or because of women their selves? A few of these videos are highlighted below:

Martha Mghendi-Fisher is the one of founders of EWPN and I ask her about her experiences. Why and how did she start this network? What does EWPN do? Who are the members? What are the goals and what can you get out of it?

Rikke Staer is the CCO of Coinify, a crypto exchange with 45% female employees. Why is she member of the European Women Payment Network? And what are here personal experiences? We also talk about the money laundring legislation and how they are going to deal with it.

Iris Sluiter is the head of market access department at the Dutch Central Bank (DNB). Why did she join the #EWPN network? How does she look at the position of women at the regulations, the banks, and the other financial institutions?

Conny Dorrestijn chaired the EWPN conference and has been in payments since forever! After 2 days moderating I ask her: What differences does she see compared with a male event? Speakers, organization, food, looks? And what is the future of payments? What trends did she spot? Will open banking change the game?

The rest of the interviews can be watched in the playlist below. Interviewed attendees are: Silvia Mensdorff-Pouilly (Founder EWPN), Mélisande Mual (The Paypers), Tony Craddock (Emerging Payments Association), Nilixa Devlukia (Open Banking), Catherine Wines (WoldRemit), Gijs Boudewijn (Dutch Payment Association) & Dave Birch (Consult Hyperion).

Insurance industry & Innovation

Innovative fintech solutions will play a big role in the insurance industry of the future. The Digital Insurance Agenda (DIA) taps into that and is dedicated to accelerate the crucial innovation of the insurance industry as the first global community that connects insurance executives to fintech leaders.

DIA Munich 2018

This week, DIA was in Munich and I was there to see how 1000 insurance companies met with 50+ tech startups & grow ups that will disrupt the insurance industry live in action; in just two days! Watch my overview of this great innovation event where I will also show you a very interesting Dutch invention named Somnox that helps to promote sleep, a favorite of Conny Dorrestijn.

Consumer Development Trends

Laurent Haug is a French trendwatcher, public speaker, investor, entrepreneur, consultant and advisor. I talk with Laurent about consumer development trends: Will the future of retail be online or offline? Laurent thinks that blending both worlds is the way to go, but why? How does he see the distinction between offline & online disappear?

Future of robots

What about the future of robots? Are robots going to be hugely important? Will they take our jobs or will they create new jobs? What is his opinion on social intelligence of machines? We have an interesting debate!

Make sure you also take a look at his presentations on YouTube!
